Angela McIver, PhD - Founder and CEO

With over fifteen years experience in education and business, Angela has a PhD in Teaching, Learning and Curriculum from the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania, a MsEd from Temple University and a BA in History and Economics from Hampton University. She has been a founding member of several highly successful education programs including founding director of the Math/Science Upward Bound program at Temple University which was chosen as a National Model Program under her leadership; and co-founder of Mastery Charter Schools, considered one of the best Charter Management Organizations in the country. Since 2005 she has built Math Foundations, LLC - a company that focuses on developing effective interventions for older students with weak math foundations -based on her dissertation research Number Sense: An exploration of urban middle school students’ numerical reasoning for which she received a Spencer Dissertation Fellowship. Her expertise is in learning theory, curriculum design and teacher training.

Valerie Klein, PhD - Vice President,  Product Development

A former high school math teacher and policy researcher, Valerie has been involved in numerous projects designed to increase accessibility and opportunity in mathematics for students, teachers and adult learners - particularly in urban settings. She has been working with Math Foundations since 2005 and has been involved in all facets of the needs assessments for students and teachers as well as the product development for remediation and professional development modules. She was the recipient of the Spencer Dissertation Fellowship for her research of adult learners of mathematics in which she conducted a formative evaluation of two financial education classrooms. Her area of specialty is qualitative studies on teaching and learning. Dr. Klein has a B.A. in mathematics and economics from Amherst College and a PhD in Teaching, Learning and Curriculum from the University of Pennsylvania.

Pete Cion - Chief Technology Officer

As Chief Technology Officer, Mr. Cion oversees the development of SMART software which includes the assessment and remediation processes partially delivered by  artificial intelligence-driven software and partially delivered by teachers trained in SMART intervention techniques. A software engineer, architect and engineering manager since 1993,  Mr. Cion has built financial systems for Princeton TeleCom, HP/VeriFone, Trintech, CyberSource, American Cash Exchange, Princeton Payment Solutions and PayQuik/Citi.  His years as a software engineer have given him deep appreciation for the engineering process, data modelling, data security and hardened software.   Mr. Cion holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Brown University, and is thrilled to be leading the software team for Math Foundations.
